Update on Homeless Series Participant
August 10th, 2009Some great news on the Los Angeles homeless front, and ultimately for the entire disabled homeless community. Shawnee Mackay, a friend of mine I interviewed for the three part series on homelessness that was posted on the blog earlier this year, has succeeded in suing the city of Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority for denying her access to multiple city shelters because of her service animal, Molly.
For more than 2 years, Shawnee has tried dozens of time to sleep in one of the city’s homeless shelters, who are by law obligated to provide shelter for people with service animals. Some do provide room for dogs, but the animals must sleep on a separate floor, which is useless since the dogs need to be near their owners to provide their services.
Shawnee suffers from multiple medial problems, including seizures, and Molly is a registered service animal that alerts Shawnee to her seizures. Due in part to her tireless efforts, and the efforts of several pro bono lawyers, this issue has finally received the attention it deserves. Beyond its obvious victory in demanding fair treatment of disabled homeless persons in the Los Angeles area, it highlights the severe dysfunction of the city shelter system in general, and is probably indicative of some of the shelter systems in other cities.
This victory is a true testament to the power of persistence, and to the power of one person’s voice. Bravo Shawnee, and the team of people who recognized injustice and dedicated their services to demanding something better.
